The Atlantic County Mayors’ Association recently approved a resolution opposing proposed rate increases by Atlantic City Electric.
The resolution calls on the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities to reject an 8 percent increase expected to be heard this month, which follows a 17 percent hike set to take effect in June.
Mayors from Absecon, Brigantine, Egg Harbor City, Egg Harbor Township, Estell Manor, Galloway Township, Hamilton Township, Linwood, Longport, Margate, Pleasantville, Port Republic, Somers Point, Ventnor and Weymouth Township signed the resolution.
“These increases are an unacceptable burden on hardworking families and small businesses across Atlantic County,” Brigantine Mayor Vince Sera said in a release. “The cost of living is already skyrocketing, and now residents are being asked to shoulder yet another massive utility rate hike. We cannot stand by while these costs continue to rise unchecked.”
The bipartisan resolution highlights the urgent need for greater transparency and consumer protection in the rate setting process. It urges residents and businesses to voice their opposition by filing complaints with the NJBPU and contacting the governor’s office to demand action.
