An Egg Harbor Township man was arrested after he allegedly made threats that locked down Hamilton Township schools, and then brandished a knife when confronted on a NJ Transit bus.
Herbert Myers allegedly called Hamilton police Wednesday, and made threats against schools in Mays Landing.
The nearby schools were notified and took enhanced security measures, police said.
Hamilton police and Atlantic County sheriff's officers were placed in and around area schools while the investigation was being conducted, according to the report.
They quickly identified the suspect as Myers, and were able to find him in Vineland, traveling on a bus.
Hamilton Township police contacted Myers on the bus, where he brandished a knife, police said. All passengers, the driver and law enforcement officers safely evacuated.
The area of Landis Avenue and Main Road was shut down while Vineland police assisted with Myers’ safe surrender, according to the report.
Myers was taken into custody.
He is charged with second-degree false public alarms and third-degree terroristic threats.
Myers, who shares a name with his father, was released from prison Aug. 1, 2023, court records show, after serving time for theft.
He was sent to the Atlantic County Justice Facility pending a detention hearing. Additional charges are pending further investigation.
The Atlantic County Sheriff’s Office, and police from Egg Harbor Township, Bridgeton and Vineland, along with New Jersey State Police, New Jersey State Parole and New Jersey Transit all assisted in the investigation.
