A detention hearing for an Atlantic City police officer accused of sexually assaulting a handcuffed woman in his patrol vehicle was postponed Wednesday as the defense wades through evidence provided by the state.

Joshua Munyon, 24, of Egg Harbor Township, was arrested Thursday on charges of first- and second-degree aggravated sexual assault, along with second-degree official misconduct.

Munyon is accused of assaulting the woman Sept. 13, after he issued her a summons for being intoxicated at the Tropicana Casino, according to the charges. He has allegedly denied the incident, including saying the woman was not even in his car.

He is being held in the Cape May County Correctional Facility pending a detention hearing, which originally was set for Wednesday.

Defense attorney Lou Barbone asked for a postponement, saying that he had received the state's evidence in the case, but that it was "quite substantial."

"I spent 4½ hours last night, and I'm not even halfway through," he said of going through the flash drive the state provided. "So it's just a matter of the bulk of the material. That's the reason for the (postponement) request."

Judge William Miller granted the request, moving the hearing to Friday.

Munyon, who was hired in August 2022, was placed on a modified assignment during the investigation, according to a statement the Atlantic City Police Department provided to BreakingAC.

He now is suspended without pay pending the outcome of the criminal matter.

Munyon was among a group of 29 Special Law Enforcement Officers Class II who were promoted to full-time officers in 2023. He graduated the academy that February.
