Atlantic City police are going to look into how to make pedestrians safer thanks to a grant from Highway Traffic Safety – Atlantic-Cape May Region.
Officers next Tuesday will start enforcement operations throughout high-volume pedestrian areas. It will continue through the summer.
Those who violate existing traffic laws could receive a citation and given an educational pamphlet explaining the importance of pedestrian safety.
Sgt. Ivan Lopez, who supervises the Traffic Unit and its initiatives, recently attended several Atlantic City civic association meetings educating community members and distributing safety brochures and warning cards.
The department is encouraging pedestrians to look both ways before crossing, utilize crosswalks and intersections, wait for the walk signal, and to keep their heads up and phones down.
As for drivers, they are warning them to stop for people crossing, eliminate distractions and also keeping off their phones.
Pedestrian safety messaging will be displayed on the digital screens along the Boardwalk to make our visitors aware of this initiative as well.
A public service announcement also will run on television throughout the summer highlighting the importance of pedestrian safety.
