Nearly all parts of life are touched by technologies these days, and the world of crime is no different. One Atlantic City teen found this out the hard way in a recent arrest made possible by artificial intelligence (AI).
The Atlantic City Police Department announced on Tuesday that a juvenile male, 17, of Atlantic City, was arrested on Saturday, April 19 with the help of a ShotSpotter’s alert. ShotSpotter, created by SoundThinking Inc., is a gunshot detection system used by area law enforcement.
Using a “network of acoustic sensors,” the application is able to detect gunshot sounds and alert authorities. According to ACPD, that system alerted patrol officers around 9:53 p.m. on Saturday that a gun had been shot in the 1100 block of Baltic Avenue.
Two officers on patrol in the vicinity sought, and quickly found, the suspect, a 17-year-old male, police said. As police exited their vehicle, the juvenile fled but was apprehended, they said. According to the release, evidence of gunfire prompted the alert system, but no injuries had been reported in the area
The 17-year-old male is charged with the unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, and obstruction of justice, said police. The teen was remanded to the Harborfields Youth Detention Facility.
Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact the ACPD Criminal Investigations Section at 609-347-5766 or to submit a text anonymously to “tip411” (or 847411). Begin the text with “ACPD” in the body.
