Stockton University will debut the screening of a new documentary about Pulitzer Prize-winning artist Art Spiegelman.

“Art Spiegelman: Disaster is My Muse” details how the artist and cartoonist told his parents' Holocaust survival story through "Maus."

The graphic novel that won Spiegel man the Pulitzer Prize in 1992, depicts the author's parents as wide-eyed mice and the Nazis as cats.

The film telling his story will be shown at 6 p.m. March 5, in the L-112 lecture hall at Stockton’s Galloway Township campus.

The screening is sponsored by the Sara and Sam Schoffer Holocaust Resource Center.

Directed by Molly Bernstein and Philip Dolin, the film won the Metropolis Grand Jury Prize at the DOC NYC film festival in 2024, which is the largest film festival for documentaries in the country.

Both volumes of “Maus” have been voted by the New York Public Library as one of the 125 most important books of the last 125 years.

Spiegelman is also known for several provocative covers for “The New Yorker” magazine, where he was a staff artist and writer from 1993 to 2003.

With his wife, Françoise Mouly, Spiegelman published and edited the acclaimed and influential comics magazine “RAW” from 1980-1991, where “Maus” was first serialized.

The screening is free and open to the public, but RSVP is required by emailing hrc@stockton.edu or calling 609-652-4699.
