Boating takes center stage in Atlantic City

  • Things To Do

The Atlantic City Boat Show is at the Atlantic City Convention Center through Sunday at the Atlantic City Convention Center.

There are an array of boats, boating accessories and other items at the Atlantic City Boat Show. Hundreds of vessels will be on display and there will be plenty of interactive boating exhibits.

Those looking for boating tips should check out Fred's Shed How-to-Center. Fred will share boating tips, tricks and DIY advice. Boating and maintenance questions are welcome.

Fishermen will enjoy the pros at Goose Hummock, a leading Northwest Saltwater Fishing Outfitter. The pointers will be given atop a 30-foot fishing tank.

Ocean City's Fin-atics Marine Supply is hosting an on-water paddleboard demo. On-water test rides are available on a first-come, first-served basis. It's for anyone 10 and up.

Those who enjoy antique boats will be pleased since a number of classic boats will be on display. The show will feature a restored 1951 wooden Chris Craft Holiday and a 1968 Steven Hydroplane powered by an L-88 427 cubic inch blower engine. Boat enthusiasts will geek out at the latter since it's just one of three boats remaining that survived the harsh racing life.

Those into sand art will dig award-winning professional sand sculptor John Gowdy, who will transform a pile of sand into a work of art.

It's not just about adults at the Boat Show. Kids will enjoy creating toy boats. Children can make their own boats and bring their work home as a show souvenir.

Little anglers can try to reel in a big fish at a special ball pit pond, which is designed for those eight and younger.

There is plenty to enjoy at the Atlantic City Boat Show, which has been in town for more than 40 years.

The Atlantic City Boat Show is slated for Thursday through Sunday at the Atlantic City Convention Center, One Convention Boulevard.

Tickets are $20 for adults. Admission is free for children 12 and younger with a paid adult.

The hours are noon to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. For more information, www.acboatshow.com

Tribute band brings Queen to Atlantic City

There is no singer like Freddie Mercury.

The Queen singer-songwriter, who passed away in 1991, was one of the greatest frontmen in rock history. Mercury stole the show at Live Aid 40-years ago with a performance that was unparalleled.

The surviving members of Queen, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor reunited with Paul Rodgers 20 years ago. However, Rodgers, a stationary blues belter, was a poor fit.

American Idol alum Adam Lambert was tabbed by May and Taylor in 2011, and it worked  since the young, charismatic performer possesses the booming voice and flamboyance that Mercury impressed with each night he hit the stage. The Queen + Lambert shows routinely sell out arenas.

Queen + Lambert is on hiatus but a formidable Queen tribute act returns Saturday to Resorts.

Almost Queen, which features vocalist Joseph Russo, guitarist Steve Leonard, bassist Randy Gregg and drummer John Cappadona, has been playing classic Queen cuts for more than 20 years.

Russo has a huge set of pipes, the band incorporates four-part harmonies and possesses some serious chops. The members of the band look and act the part of the legendary rock act.

Count on the big hits, such as "We Will Rock You, "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Fat Bottomed Girls" and "Radio GaGa." Also, expect some deep cuts, like "Spread Your Wings" and "Love of my Life."

Tickets for the Yacht Rock Revue are on sale. YRR, which will perform March 29 at the Hard Rock, delivers soft rock classics with smooth melodies and soothing harmonies. Expect tunes from Hall & Oates, Steely Dan and Christopher Cross.
