An Atlantic City man is accused of trying to kill his child's mother and then having a Somers Point woman help cover it up.
Police were called to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus at 2:48 Tuesday morning for the report of a 32-year-old woman dropped off at the Emergency Room seriously injured from a gunshot wound.
The person who dropped off the victim left immediately after, police were told.
Personnel in the city's Surveillance Center searched for the suspect vehicle, and quickly directed officers to the first block of South Iowa Avenue, across the street from the police station, Capt. Kevin Fair said.
The vehicle was found with blood on it, Fair said.
An investigation led to an apartment on the block, where police found Edwin Jones, three women, two toddlers and an infant. The victim is the mother of at least one of the children.
Violent Crimes Unit detectives later executed court authorized search warrants on the apartment and the vehicle.
Jones shot the victim and directed another woman to drive her to the medical center, an investigation found.
Katie Harpel, 29, then tried to help clean the residence, according to the report.
A handgun and additional evidence were recovered outside of the apartment building, Fair said.
Jones and Harpel were arrested.
They were taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
They both have detention hearings set for Friday.
The Division of Child Protection and Permanency responded to assist with placement for the three children.
Jones, 39, is additionally charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, two counts of aggravated assault and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child, along with tampering with evidence and certain person not to possess a weapon.
Harpel is charged with tampering with evidence and hindering apprehension.
