Mays Landing man's ATV seized for illegal use in Atlantic City

  • Public Safety

A Mays Landing man is charged with eluding and obstruction after he allegedly ran from police trying to speak with him about illegally riding an ATV.

Rashaun Blumfield's ATV also was seized.

Police Chief James Sarkos and Deputy Chiefs Andrew Leonard and Christian Garofalo were on patrol at 9:50 p.m. Saturday, when they saw a group of ATV and dirt bike riders illegally driving on Pacific Avenue in an erratic manner, Capt. Kevin Fair said.

The officers followed the group in an unmarked vehicle to Albany and Winchester avenues, Blumfield stopped at a gas station, according to the report.

The officers pulled up alongside the ATV as Blumfield was about to fuel up, Fair said.

Sarkos tried to speak with Blumfield, who hopped back on the ATV and tried to drive away.

Sarkos was able to grab onto Blumfield with the ATV still moving forward, and forced it toward the curb, according to the report.

Blumfield resisted arrest and broke free, running onto Albany Avenue, where Leonard started chasing him, Fair said.

Blumfield ultimately surrendered and was taken into custody. The ATV was towed from the scene.

The other riders fled the area.

Blumfield was charged on a summons and released.

The public is reminded that operating an ATV or dirt bike on a city street is illegal.

Police ask that if you see the illegal operation of these vehicles, take photographs or videos and submit them for possible criminal charges and seizure of the vehicle.

Police officers who encounter illegal riders operating on the street must adhere to the New Jersey Office of Attorney General’s policy on when to initiate a pursuit. This determination will be made with the safety of the public, the officers, and the rider in mind.  Police officers will attempt to confiscate ATVs and dirt bikes by using means similar to this arrest and seizure.
