An Atlantic City man with a history of drug use while on federal release admitted to running a cocaine-production facility out of an Absecon motel room.and stashing a gun in an Atlantic City residence.
Darryl Murphy, 45, faces 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to first-degree charges of a manufacturing facility and cocaine possession with intent to distribute.
He was arrested last August, after members of the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area task force searched his motel room in Absecon.
Police found more than a half-ounce of cocaine, baking soda used to cook crack cocaine, a large glass measuring cup, a knife with cocaine residue on it, a scale and multiple sized empty baggies inside the room.
The cocaine and paraphernalia were near a microwave, which are commonly used to cook crack cocaine, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office noted.
Murphy also admitted that a loaded 9mm handgun found at a residence in Atlantic City belonged to him, and he had stashed it there.
The task force investigated the case, along with Atlantic City police and the Prosecutor’s Office.
Murphy must serve at least five years before he is eligible for parole. He already had credit for about 10 months.
He previously served federal prison time for a 2014 gun case out of Atlantic City.
At that time, investigators found three guns inside a safe in his Atlantic City residence, two that were operable, according to federal documents viewed by BreakingAC.
He was sentenced to 100 months in prison in 2016, along with three years of supervised released.
Since Murphy's release from federal prison Oct. 29, 2021, he has has at least four violations for positive drug tests, court records show.
The most recent was March 28, 2024, when he tested positive for cocaine, according to an order signed at that time.
Murphy is scheduled to be sentenced in the state case on Sept. 15.
