Ralph Hunter has made it his mission to preserve the history of Atlantic City.
In doing so, he himself is wove into the fabric of the city's history.
He founded the African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey with locations in Atlantic City and Newtonville.
Last year, a mural by artist Heather Deegan Hires made sure Hunter has a special spot as part of a mural unveiled behind the Cooper Levenson Office Building.
"Northside" focused on the section's rich history, including Art Dorrington, Chicken Bone Beach, Club Harlem, Maggie Creswell and "a surprise dedication to my amazing friend Ralph Hunter," Deegan Hires wrote in marking the occasion last June.
Now, to mark the mural's first year, the public is invited to gather at 1125 Atlantic Ave. at 4 p.m. Monday to mark Ralph Hunter Day.
A brief program will be held with Deegan Hires among the speakers.
Assemblyman Don Guardian, a former Atlantic City mayor, will present a framed proclamation that was signed by the Assembly speaker and state Senate president.
Atlantic City Arts Foundation Executive Director Michael Atkins will serve as master of ceremonies.
There will be postcards of the mural and Ken’s Ice Cream truck will provide treats.
