Beth Israel in Northfield is hosting two movie-themed events that relay the story of Purim.
The spring Jewish holiday is based on the Biblical Book of Esther that tells a story of escape from planned persecution and slaughter. Despite the serious subject, the holiday is celebrated in joy and comedy, often retelling the story in farcical ways or with creative parody.
A Wicked-themed Purim Carnival will be held 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 9 at the synagogue, 2501 Shore Road.
Children are encouraged to come in costume.
The program features games and prizes, an escape room, hair tinsel, costume contests, face painting, crafts, pizza and make-your-own hamantaschen. Hamantaschen will be available for purchase.
The family-friendly event is open to the community. Cost is $36 per family. RSVP to cookie.feldman@cbinorthfield.org or call 609-641-3600.
The community is also invited to a special Wicked Bob Dylan-themed Purim Shabbat service 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 14.
The service will feature a fun retelling of the Purim story with Rabbi Michael L. Feshbach, Cantor Marshall Portnoy and the Beth Israel Choir.
The service will include parodies of songs based on the hit musical, “Wicked,” and the recent Bob Dylan movie, “A Complete Unknown,” followed by a Haman’s hat triangle dinner and trivia.
Cost for the pizza dinner, games and Purim trivia is $18 per family. RSVP to bethisrael@cbinorthfield.org or call 609-641-3600.
