A Galloway Township man convicted of sexually assaulting a minor beginning when she was 5 years old was sentenced to 35 years in prison Wednesday.
The 24-year-old man's name is not being released "to protect the privacy and interests of the victim," according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.
The now-16-year-old girl testified at trial that the defendant sexually assaulted her in the family home from the ages of 5 to 12. The unnamed assailant would have been about 13 when the abuse began.
How the two may be related was not revealed, despite the convicted rapist's name not being disclosed.
The victim came forward when she was 14.
A jury convicted the unnamed man of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, second-degree sexual assault and third-degree charges of showing obscene material to a minor and endangering the welfare of a child.
This sentence falls under the Jessica Lunsford Act, which imposes a sentence of 25 years to life for sexual assaults of children younger than 13.
The man also must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence, or about 29 years and nine months, under the No Early Release Act.
He also will be subject to parole supervision for life and Megan’s Law registration upon his release.
This case was investigated by the Egg Harbor Township Police Department, which obtained a confession from the defendant.
