An Egg Harbor Township man charged with leaving the scene of a crash that killed his passenger was released from jail Monday.
Jean Zambrano-Briones, 28, struck a telephone pole in the area of South New Road and the Black Horse Pike in Pleasantville at about 2:20 a.m. March 13, according to the charges.
A witness saw Zambrano-Briones walk away from the crash, according to the affidavit of probable cause obtained by BreakingAC. He was found behind the township Walmart, about a half-mile from the crash.
His passenger, Gustavo Huestipa-Peralta, was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's Mainland Campus in Galloway Township, where he died from his injuries.
The two men lived together. The victim's mother told police that the two left together shortly before the crash.
Zambrano-Briones was issued several tickets, including driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and careless driving.
He was jailed for knowingly leaving the scene of a crash resulting in a death, a second-degree crime.
It was the second time Zambrano-Briones was charged with leaving the scene of a crash.
In August of last year, he was charged with leaving the scene of a crash causing personal injury on the Garden State Parkway in East Orange. The charge was dismissed due to lack of prosecution, court records show.
Zambrano-Briones was released Monday, following a detention hearing where he listened via a Spanish interpreter.
Conditions of his release include surrendering his passport and driver's license to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office. He also is to have no contact with the victim's family, who own the apartment where he lived.
Zambrano-Briones is employed with the Atlantic City Housing Authority, his attorney told the judge.
It was unclear whether he would maintain that employment, attorney Ed Weinstock said.
He noted that Zambrano-Briones may have to move in with family, who live in Elizabeth, Union County.
