PETA had an interesting request of Egg Harbor Township recently.
The well-known animal rights nonprofit sent a letter to Mayor Laura Pfrommer offering a deal if the township changed its name to "Just Egg Harbor Township."
Just Egg is a plant-based egg substitute made from mung beans.
Ingrid Newkirk, president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said it would help draw attention to the vegan alternatives, and bring attention to the plight of chickens used for their eggs.
The name change would not need to be permanent, but could have an impact "even if only for one eggstra special day," Newkirk wrote.
"To celebrate, we'd happily supply a fabulous Just Egg breakfast with plant-based bacon for you and your staff and guests, and offer samples to visitors at the next council meeting."
The city did not respond to a request seeking comment.
But Just Egg said they were surprised by the move.
"Unfortunately, our brand did not think of this creative stunt," Just Egg Chief Marketing Officer Thomas Rossmeissi told BreakingAC in a statement. "As much as we'd love to be on the town sign, we recognize that our delicious, sustainable plant-based eggs have only been around for six years now. It might be a bit premature for a township incorporated in the 18th century."
He said that the company does "encourage the good people of Egg Harbor to swing by their local Shoprite, Acme or Walmart and pick up some of our really good eggs."
He even provided a township-based line to get $1 off: ju.st/eggharbor.
Allyson Spellman, spokeswoman for PETA, said that they just asked Just Egg to give them some free product, "and they said yes."
"If Egg Harbor were to change its name to Just Egg Harbor, it would raise awareness of the many benefits of choosing healthy, delicious vegan eggs," she added.
And, yes, the original email told recipients of the offer, "It's no yolk."
