SJI Veterans Engagement Team feeds those who served, remembers those lost

  • Good Citizens

South Jersey Industries employees donated nearly a ton of nonperishable food items to benefit those at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.

The Veterans Engagement Team, or VET, is an employee resource group at SJI, which runs South Jersey Gas. The group organized the food drive in collaboration with the Service to the Armed Forces and American Red Cross.

The Service to the Armed Forces program provides home comforts and critical services on bases and in military hospitals, and also supports military families during deployments and emergencies.

“SJI is proud to partner with the Service to the Armed Forces and American Red Cross to feed the
military and veterans through our food drive,” said Mike Bizzoco, vice president of Information
Technology. “These brave men and women have served and sacrificed for our country, so it is rewarding to see the community come together for them in support of a great cause.”

VETs also sponsored the 4th annual Jo Carney drive to collect items for the Veterans Memorial Home in Vineland, Cumberland County.

Employees donated toiletries, clothes, puzzles and activity books to offer small lifestyle improvements for the residents living there.

Remembering those missing

SJI employees also set up a missing persons table at their Atlantic City, Green Lane and Folsom locations to commemorate the more than 81,000 missing Americans from the Korean War, WWII, Vietnam, Cold War, Gulf War and other conflicts.

The table will be on display through May 30.

Employees last week distributed folded flag and poppy pins while sharing the true meaning of Memorial Day at those locations.

They also had the opportunity to write down the names of friends and family members who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country and display them on a Wall of Honor.
