Atlantic City man charged with attempted murder after attack, standoff

  • News
An Atlantic City man was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly pistol-whipped a man, robbed him and then took refuge inside his home. Police were called to the 400 block of New Jersey Avenue at 2:09 p.m., for a ShotSpotter alert. Detectives Howard Mason and Jaimee Moore arrived at the scene to find the 40-year-old victim had been pistol-whipped, Sgt. Kevin Fair said. He told police he and the suspect, Matthew Sturdivant, had gotten into an argument on the street, when Sturdivant pulled out a handgun and started to hit the victim in the head, according to the report. Sturdivant, 20, then stole the man's money. The victim, whose name was not released, broke away from Sturdivant and ran into his residence as the alleged attacker fired several rounds. The house was shot, but the victim was not. Officers went to Sturdivant's residence nearby, but were denied access by a family member, Fair said. The department's SWAT and Crisis Negotiation teams were called. A negotiator was able to contact the female relative, who agreed to come out of the home with Sturdivant. Shortly after 3 p.m., they both left the home, and Sturdivant was taken into custody without incident. Officers found the handgun in the rear of the home. Sturdivant is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, robber, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He was taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
