Galloway man accused of recording in bathrooms released pending trial

Daniel Zhang

  • Crime-Courts

A Galloway Township man accused of secretly recording men inside local bathrooms was ordered released from jail Monday.

Daniel Zhang, 23, was first charged Sept. 16, after Hamilton Township police were called to the Planet Fitness there.

Zhang told police he recorded by standing in one stall, and then lifting his cell phone so it recorded a stall on the other side of the barrier.

He admitted to making "like four" other recordings over the past couple of months, according to the affidavit of probable cause.

Zhang was released on a summons at that time, with his phone taken as part of the investigation.

A search of the phone then found a total of 49 videos starting May 27, according to the charges.

Nineteen of the incidents took place in Mays Landing, with others including Egg Harbor City, Medford in Burlington County and Bermuda.

He was jailed but released following a detention hearing Monday before Superior Judge Joseph Levin, who labeled his decision a close call.

Zhang must check in with the court weekly, alternating between in-person and via phone. He also cannot use a cell phone with a camera.

He faces 15 counts of third-degree invasion of privacy.
