A man found dead inside a Pleasantville home after a shooting Saturday morning wounded another man with gunfire but was not shot himself, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon Tyner said.
The prosecutor originally said that one man was dead and another injured as the result of a shooting at the multi-occupancy home on the 300 block of West Wright Street.
But further investigation found no outward indication of what killed 69-year-old James Roberts.
Police were called to the scene at about 8:45 a.m. for the report of a man with a gunshot wound to the face.
They arrived to find the wounded man, whose name has not been released. A gun was found in front of the residence.
The wounded man was hospitalized and told police he was shot during a domestic argument, Tyner said.
He told police he was able to disarm Roberts, who ran.
Police surrounded the building and found Roberts dead on the exterior stairs on the third floor with a handgun nearby. He was pronounced dead at 11:50 a.m.
It is believed that the gun found in the front of the residence was the one used in the shooting. The one found near Roberts had not been discharged.
Despite initial reports by Tyner's office that the dead man was shot in what was being deemed a homicide investigation, the medical examiner found no visible injuries that could have caused Roberts' death. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday morning.
