Atlantic City man fought officer while wearing gun 'like a necklace,' police say

An Atlantic City man wearing a gun like a necklace assaulted a police officer after trying to flee arrest, police said.Driver Anthony Gallipoli first drew the attention of detectives as he smoked crack cocaine in the parked car at about 4:20 p.m. Wednesday, according to the report.While Detective Alberto Valles was talking with the driver, Detective Nick Berardis saw Khalil Tate in the back seat stuffing a package in his pocket, Sgt. Kevin Fair said.Tate, 29, was taken out of the vehicle, and the bag determined to contain cocaine, according to the report.When told he was under arrest, Tate tried to run, Fair said. Berardis grabbed him and was struck in the face by Tate's elbow.Valles helped get Tate to the ground, where Berardis was again elbowed in the face, causing a laceration, Fair said.After a long struggle, Tate was arrested and found to a have a loaded handgun tied around his neck with a shoelace, according to the report. The shoelace went through the gun's trigger guard and hung like a necklace.Tate, who was arrested last year on drug and gun charges, was also allegedly found with 54 Ecstasy pills and two bags of heroin.

He was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, certain person not to possess a weapon, aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, three counts of possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession with intent to distribute, possession with intent to distribute within 500 feet of a public zone, and possession of weapon while in commission of a drug offense.He was taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.Gallipoli, 38, of Barnegat, was charged with drug possession. He was released on a summons.His other passenger, Stephanie Edwards, tried to run but was quickly caught, Fair said. Edwards, 33, of Pleasantville, was found to have several active warrants, and was taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
