Atlantic City forum to discuss proposed Airbnb ordinances

  • News

Atlantic City's mayor will discuss proposals for oversight of short-term rentals like Airbnbs in the city Tuesday evening.
The 5 p.m. meeting will be held in City Council chambers but will be limited to 29 in attendance due to COVID-19.
It will also be livestreamed on the city's website.

Mayor Marty Small announced in August that the city would be cracking down on these rentals.
An investigation by a private company found 700 properties in the city acting in this capacity with the city unaware of about 615, he said at the time.
The city newsletter in May told residents who rent out their properties via Airbnb, VRBO or anything similar are now required to register their properties through the Department of Licensing and Inspections.
The number listed there led to a fax machine. But those wanting to register should call 609-347-5290.
"Any property owner who fails to register will be subject to immediate closing and fines," the newsletter states. "Additionally, those owners may be prevented from doing future business in Atlantic City.
New regulations include an application fee, along with occupancy limits of 16 and no one younger than 21 able to rent.
Those who want to rent out their property must pay $150 application fee.
In addition, rather than the previous $300 per season cost, the city will charge annual fees.
BreakingAC previously learned of problems at several properties concerning crime, although that has not been officially addressed by anyone with the city.
One VRBO property was the site of a home invasion and rape in July. Atlantic City police did not put out a release to the media and public about the incident
BreakingAC reported it a month later, after obtaining information through multiple public records requests.
Another property had two armed home invasions within a 48-hour period.
