Two charged in killing of Atlantic City man

Two men are charged with murder in the in the May killing of an Atlantic City man.
Denzel Garrison and Laquine Demby were arrested as the result of a multi-agency effort, acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Cary Shill said Wednesday.
“I would like to commend the work of the (Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office) Major Crimes Unit and to also thank our local, state and federal law enforcement partners for their assistance with this investigation…,” Shill said.
Jahmil Greenidge, 28, was found fatally shot in the 300 block of North Tennessee Avenue at about 8 a.m. May 19.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
About a week later, the Prosecutor’s Office put out a photo of a black car seen in surveillance video right before the shooting.
“This incident occurred in broad daylight in a well-traveled area of the city,” then-county Prosecutor Damon Tyner said at the time. “We need witnesses to step up and take a stand against the violence in our community. If you saw something, then please say something to assist us with giving this family closure.”
It was not clear from Wednesday’s announcement whether that car helped in the arrests.
Both men are charged with murder and conspiracy.
Garrison, 28, who lives in Newark, was arrested by police there, Shill said.
The acting prosecutor did not say whether Garrison was armed at the time. But he was additionally charged with possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
Demby, 30, of Pleasantville, was arrested in his hometown by detectives from the Major Crimes Unit along with Pleasantville police.
Demby himself was the victim of a serious shooting in 2017, that killed another man.
Matthew Gonzalez, 31, is serving a 40-year sentence in that Hamilton Township shooting that killed 31-year-old Taufeeq Mitchell. He was convicted of attempted murder for shooting Demby.
Demby and Garrison are now lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility awaiting detention hearings.
