An Atlantic City man charged in the beating of a teen later found dead in Pleasantville will remain jailed.
Jamaul Timberlake, 30, is one of three men accused of assaulting Irving Mayren-Guzman in Pleasantville outside Centerfolds in Pleasantville on Jan. 23.
Mayren-Guzman, 19, was highly intoxicated at the time, according to evidence discussed in court. He was then escorted from the club by bouncers.
Timberlake along with brothers Garnell and John Hands are shown on video “pummeling” the teen after an altercation outside the strip club, Judge Todd Miller said during Timberlake’s detention hearing Friday.
The brothers’ detention hearings have been postponed.
The recommendation was to release Timberlake by the public safety assessment used under bail reform. But the state argued it did not consider Timberlake’s juvenile record, which includes a carjacking and a sexual assault committed when he was 12, which makes him a Megan’s Law offender.
He has had no interactions with the criminal justice system as an adult and no failures to appear, the judge acknowledged.
The cause of Mayren-Guzman’s death has not yet been determined. An autopsy has not linked the men to his death, but BreakingAC has learned it will be another four to six weeks until they are finalized. That would indicate toxicology tests are pending.
The judge said Friday that if the results indicate it was severe intoxication that caused the teen’s death, another detention hearing could be held.
That would indicate that, even though Timberlake is not charged in the death, the judge considered in his decision.
Defense attorney John Stein told BreakingAC he will be appealing the decision.
