Atlantic City ShotSpotter alert leads to gun arrest

  • News

A teenager was arrested with a gun and drugs after a ShotSpotter alert Tuesday night.

The gunshot audio-detection system brought Officer Joseph Kelly Jr. to the 1600 block of Wabash Avenue at 11:11 p.m., Sgt. Paul Aristizabal said.

Quamir Beltran and Oquan Thomas, both 18, were seen walking west quickly from the immediate area of the alert, according to the report.

Kelly and Officer Nicholas Grasso tried to stop the two, who refused the officers' orders to stop, Aristizabal said.

The two went into a store in the 600 block of North New York Avenue, where police made contact with them, according to the report.

Beltran was found with a handgun loaded with a high-capacity magazine and a small plastic bag with suspected cocaine, Aristizabal said.

The gun was a ghost gun, meaning it has no serial number.

He was charged with possession of a weapon, possession of a large-capacity magazine, possession of a ghost gun, possession of a controlled dangerous substance and obstruction. He was taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.

Thomas was charged with obstruction and released on a summons.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Atlantic City police at 609-347-5766. Information may also be texted anonymously to tip411 (847411), beginning the text with ACPD.
