A man was wounded in a police-involved shooting Tuesday morning in Absecon.
Police were called to the Dollar General at about 9:30 a.m. for the report of a man with a gun, a source close to the investigation told BreakingAC.
Jalial Whitted allegedly fired a shot inside the store before police arrived, the source said.
Holy Spirit High School, which is about a block away, was put on lockdown as a precaution.
Police from Absecon and Pleasantville arrived on the scene. Whitted allegedly reached for something and was shot multiple times.
A gun was recovered, according to the source.
Whitted was hospitalized as of Tuesday evening.
Videos posted by several witnesses showed some of the events.
The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office is conducting the initial investigation as the Independent Investigator and the Office of Public Integrity and Accountability will serve as the Independent Supervisory Reviewer, said K.C. Lopez, a spokesperson for the Attorney General's Office.
"At this time, questions regarding this matter should be referred to the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office," Lopez told BreakingAC.
Acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Cary Shill would not comment beyond a release that was put out Tuesday.
"There are no preliminary investigative results to report, including suspect information or related injuries," he wrote.
While the statement said there were no reported injuries to any police officers, BreakingAC has confirmed at least one officer suffered injury but was not shot.
Pleasantville and Absecon police were on scene.
