Ex-Margate firefighters gets 37 months for part in multimillion-dollar health insurance scheme

  • News

A former Margate firefighter was sentenced to more than three years in prison for his part in a scheme that bilked health insurance out of millions.

John Sher, 40, pleaded guilty July 28.

He was sentenced to 37 months in prison along with two years of supervised release.

Sher also must pay $2.77 million in restitution and forfeit $327,987, the amount he made in submitting fraudulent claims for medically unnecessary prescriptions.

Sher’s brother Margate Firefighter Michael Sher previously pleaded guilty in the case.

Another brother, Thomas Sher — also a Margate firefighter — was convicted at trial in September.

It was not clear when he would begin serving his sentence.
