Teen girls charged in fight at Atlantic High involving substitute teacher

  • News

Threes teen have been charged with aggravated assault in a fight at Atlantic City High School that included a substitute teacher being injured.

Police were called to the school Wednesday afternoon. Several videos shared on social media show the melee that included several students.

When police arrived, the fight was already over and the involved parties were separated, Sgt. Paul Aristizabal said.

The fight began when three students ages 14, 15 and 16 started assaulting a 15-year-old student, according to an investigation by Detective Fariyd Holmes.

The 24-year-old teacher tried to break up the fight and was assaulted as well, according to the report.

The teacher is the sister of the girl who was allegedly attacked, BreakingAC has confirmed.

School security broke up the fight.

But one of the girl's mothers insisted in a Facebook Live video taken from outside the Public Safety Building, that it was the teacher who instigated the issue.

The woman also claims the teacher was around Carver Hall a couple of weeks earlier "trying to fight 15-year-old girls."

The girls are charged with aggravated assault.

As their guardians waited for them to be released, a fight broke out among the adults outside the Public Safety Building.

Three women were charged with disorderly conduct: Monique Spellman, 42, Tanika Joyce, 45, and Brandi Braxton, 31, all of the city.

Spellman's nieces were the ones the girls are accused of attacking.

Everyone was released on summonses.

The investigation is still ongoing, Aristizabal told BreakingAC.

The fight may be as well.

The uncle of the same girl whose mother was outside the Police Department claims the teacher went to their home Wednesday night, and broke their Ring camera.

He sent BreakingAC a photo captured from video right before the camera broke. It does not appear to be the teacher, whose right eye is swollen shut from the attack.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 609-347-5766. Information may also be texted to tip411 (847411), beginning the text with ACPD.
