Ex-Northfield pharmaceutical rep gets home detention in multimillion-dollar fraud

  • News

A pharmaceutical sales representative who faced as much as a decade in federal prison for his part in a far-reaching health fraud case instead will serve one year at home.

Richard Zappala, 50, made nearly $1.5 million in the scheme that had doctors prescribing unnecessary compound medications for patient they didn't see, bilking health care benefit of millions.

The Northfield man's actions alone cost more than $4.2 million, which he was ordered to pay in restitution.

The sentencing comes more than 5½ years after he pleaded guilty.

The U.S. Attorney's Office did not put out a release announcing the sentence that happened on Thursday.

"We don’t issue press releases on sentences that are less than one year custodial, unless there are extenuating circumstances (like a famous defendant or some other issue)," a spokesman for the office told BreakingAC.

Zappala must also serve five years' probation and is banned from employment in the medical and pharmaceutical fields.
