A South Dakota man will stay in jail for allegedly killing his cousin outside a family memorial in Egg Harbor City.
Dominique Woodall, 27, came back to the state to pay respects in the death of another relative.
Woodall was behind the wheel of that car, according to witnesses. Two people who were inside the truck with him said Woodall told them to get out, and then he drove away.
He was later arrested at his uncle's home in Pleasantville, where he had been staying.
But Woodall denies he was the one who shot his cousin, defense attorney Maya Rex said at a detention hearing Thursday.
"He heard there was a commotion but he was not involved whatsoever in the commotion," Rex told the judge. "He then left and went back to uncle’s house in Pleasantville."
He was arrested around 2 a.m. June 19.
Woodall has prior convictions in Atlantic County for gun possession and drugs, and has served two prison terms.
He moved to South Dakota with his mother and sister to turn his life around, his attorney said.
That didn't work out, according to the state.
Woodall has a pending charged for impersonating another in South Dakota.
After his arrest in the killing, Woodall tried to remove his handcuffs, Assistant Prosecutor Paige Cramer said.
"His criminality is out of control," Judge William Miller said. "If you’re willing to go to at a funeral and shoot your cousin, that’s pretty serious. That’s pretty bold."
Woodall will now remain jailed pending resolution of his case.
