The Attorney General's Office is investigating a Cumberland County man's death while in State Police custody.
The 30-year-old Fairfield Township man was arrested Saturday and taken to N.J. State Police Bridgeton Station.
The man, who is not being named, was arrested for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
Emergency medical personnel were called to the station at about 8 p.m, after the man became unresponsive, according to the a release from the Attorney General’s Office.
Troopers performed life-saving measures before the man was taken to Inspira Medical Center in Vineland.
He died at 11:37 p.m. the next day.
This investigation is being conducted under Attorney General Directive 2019-4, which implements the statutory requirement that the Attorney General’s Office conduct the investigation of any death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody, and which establishes clear standards and procedures for conducting such investigations. The investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released at this time.
