Millville man who died in State Police custody is identified

  • News

The Attorney General’s Office has released the name of the Millville man who died in State Police custody earlier this month.

Daniel King, 30, died a day after he was arrested for assaulting a trooper in Fairfield Township.

The Attorney General's Office is investigating the death.

A trooper was dispatched to a residence in Fairfield Township at about 7 p.m. July 8, so that King could retrieve property from the residence, according to the Attorney General's Office.

King allegedly became confrontational and later assaulted the trooper. He continued the assault until two civilians intervened and assisted his arrest, according to the preliminary investigation.

King was arrested and later charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and transported to the NJSP Bridgeton Station.

King suffered a medical episode at the station, and became unresponsive.

Lifesaving efforts were performed by troopers before he was transported by EMS to Inspira Medical Center in Vineland. His condition continued to deteriorate until he died at 11:37 p.m. July 9.

The investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released at this time.

Meanwhile, King's family is looking for answers, NJ.com reported.

The family is waiting for information from the autopsy and toxicology reports the man's aunt, Bridgeton City Councilwoman Marian King told the publication.

“If he died of natural causes, then that’s what it is,” she said. “At this point, it doesn’t line up to that.”
