A.C. mayor responds to report of homeless man 'living' in City Hall

  • News

Atlantic City police are investigating after a man was found Monday morning inside City Hall, Mayor Marty Small said.

"Kudos to the swift response by the City of Atlantic City Divisions of Youth, Senior, Multicultural Affairs and Recreation, who alerted me right away, this morning, when they discovered an individual was inside their office," Small said. "The Atlantic City Police Department arrived at City Hall shortly after, immediately taking the man into custody without incident. There was damage to the office space, however nobody was hurt, which is the most important thing."

The man's name was not released.

Small went on to allege that City Councilman George Tibbitt released photos to radio host Harry Hurley in what he said was "inappropriate, messy and downright wrong."

"I had zero intent on making the administration look bad," Tibbitt told BreakingAC, acknowledging that he sent some photos to Hurley, but that the radio host already had others.

"The only intent is to show the problem of homelessness becoming so bad that it reached out own house in City Hall," he said. "This is not a negative on the mayor. This is brining light to the problem of homelessness that we have."

Hurley's report questioned City Hall security and said that city "insiders expressed concerns about how the people could have made it through an entire weekend without being detected."

He also claimed an unnamed City council source told him "the person(s) who occupied City Hall partied in a spirited fashion throughout the weekend," and that one person defecated on the floor.

Tibbitt, who Hurley often quotes, said he had "zero intent" to cast a bad light on the administration, and then alleged that "whenever something's not positive, (Small) makes it political."

Small claimed Tibbitt snuck into City Hall and took the photos even though there was an "active crime scene." Tibbitt said there were no police present and that workers were going in and out of the office freely while he was there.

Regardless of the intent, the mayor said "the Small administration will continue to be proactive to ensure unfortunate incidents like the one this morning will not take place in the future.“

It was not immediately clear if the person removed was charged. No names have been released at this time.
