An Egg Harbor Township man allegedly stole nine boxes of cigarettes from behind a Wawa counter while Pleasantville police were there Tuesday afternoon.
Robert Jones, 32, grabbed the Newport 100s at the Wawa on Delilah Road at about 2:30 p.m., and tried to flee when Officer Girard Tell ordered him to stop, Capt. Matt Hartman said.
Tell identified himself as an officer, "as the large white (POLICE) lettering and visible badge had apparently not deterred Jones," Hartman wrote in a press release.
Jones refused to stop and jumped into the backseat of a car parked on the east side of the building with Tell and Officer Ryan VanSyckle following.
The driver, Angelina Dixon, 33, of Mays Landing, reversed quickly as she tried to flee, but stopped when the officers ordered her to, Hartman said.
Jones was trying to hide in the backseat, according to the report. He refused to get out and the officers gave him a burst of pepper spray and pulled from the car.
Jones and Dixon were both charged with shoplifting less than $200 and disorderly persons. Jones was additionally charged with resisting arrest.
Both were released on summonses.
