Hoyle was found dead of a single gunshot wound just before 4:30 a.m. Dec. 20.
McCoy was found in North Carolina in January, and has been held in the Mecklenburg County Jail, where he was listed as Abdul Salaam. His Bloods name, according to a post by the victim's brother, is Savage Salaam. That is also the name on McCoy's Facebook page.
He fought extradition, which prolonged the process of him coming back to Atlantic County to face the charges, which include murder and weapons offenses.
McCoy appeared in Atlantic County Superior Court briefly Tuesday via video, a first appearance now given all jailed defendants under the new bail reform.
At that time, Assistant Prosecutor Rick McKelvey informed the judge that the state would move for a detention hearing, to hold McCoy until trial.
That hearing was scheduled for Thursday afternoon, but McCoy's attorney, Joe Swift, ask for an adjournment until next week so that he can review evidence in the case. The new date is March 29.
Under the new bail reform, McCoy's risk assessment put him at nine out of a possible 10, meaning he is near the highest risk.
