Suspect in two Atlantic City armed robberies arrested, knife recovered

  • News

An Atlantic City officer chased down a robbery suspect and recovered the knife possibly used in the crimes Saturday. Officer Scott Sendrick tried to stop the man just before 8 p.m. Saturday, after seeing he matched the description of the man wanted in two armed robberies earlier this month, Sgt. Kevin Fair said. https://breakingac.com/atlantic-city-police-need-help-identifying-armed-robbery-suspect/ Jermaine Whitehurst, 18, who was walking in the area of Pennsylvania and Adriatic avenues, ran across Route 30 when he saw Sendrick approach, according to the report. Whitehurst threw a knife similar to the one used in the robberies. Sendrick chased for several blocks until Whitehurst tired to hid in a bush. He was arrested without incident, Fair said. Sendrick was able to recover the knife, and it is being submitted to the New Jersey State Police crime lab for analysis. Additional charges are pending that result, Fair said. Detective Pete Calabrese charged Whitehurst with robbery and weapons offenses in the March 17 robbery of a store in the 1300 block of Pacific Avenue just after 4 p.m. In that incident, the 71-year-old clerk told Officer Brent Dooley that a man pointed a knife at him and demanded money. The suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. Whitehurst is also charged with obstruction of justice, resisting arrest and tampering with evidence. He is also a suspect in the attempted robbery of a store in the 1400 block of Atlantic Avenue on March 19. In that incident, a 27-year-old clerk working at the store was stabbed while fighting off the would-be robber.
