A longtime Galloway Township pediatrician was killed Thursday night when his car crossed into the oncoming lane and struck a stopped bus in Ventnor, police said.
Cheul Kwon, 79, was heading west on Atlantic Avenue at just before 9 p.m. when, for unknown reasons, his Kia Sorento crossed the double yellow divider lines and into the eastbound lane, Lt. Joe Fussner said.
He struck a NJ Transit bus stopped at the red traffic signal head-on, according to the report. The bus, driven by Carl Alexander, 52, of Egg Harbor Township, had no passengers and was not in service at the time.
The impact then pushed the bus into a Ventnor City Police Department patrol vehicle driven by Officer Michael Newell, 26, a three-year department veteran, Fussner said. Newell was stopped directly behind the bus.
Kwon was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus in Atlantic City, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival, Fussner said.
The next of kin has been notified.
Alexander and Newell were both taken to AtlantiCare for their injuries, which were not life-threatening.
Kwon's car sustained major damage and the bus had significant damage, according to the report.
The police car's damage was moderate.
All three vehicles were towed from the scene.
The investigation is ongoing.
