The man who shot the bullet that killed a Bridgeton girl is now in custody, according to charges.
Zahmere McKoy, 19, is the fourth person charged in the shooting that left Jennifer Trejo dead. He already was in police custody after he was shot during an altercation at a Bridgeton gas station.
The 9-year-old victim was asleep in her bed at about 12:30 a.m. July 17, when a stray bullet came through her bedroom.
Three men were already jailed on charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder and weapons offenses, when McKoy — whose name previously was released as McCoy — was charged.
McKoy was shooting at Lawrence Brewer, Tyrese McNair and a group of people that night when he missed his intended targets. The bullet meant for Brewer instead struck Trejo.
McKoy has been in a Delaware hospital since he was shot Aug. 20, during fight at the Riggins station on Burlington Road and Route 49.
A detention hearing will be set for McKoy, Cumberland County Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae said.
Meanwhile, detention hearings are set for the other three men charged in the case.
Michael Elliott, Leroy Frazier III and Charles Gamble are jailed on charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder and weapons offenses.
Charles Gamble, 18, and Michael Elliott, 25, each appeared briefly before Superior Court Judge Robert Malestein on Thursday morning, when their defense attorneys asked for postponements to give them time to go over the "voluminous" evidence in the case.
They are now scheduled to have their hearings before Superior Court Judge Cristen D'Arrigo next Wednesday.
Frazier is scheduled to have his detention hearing before Judge Joseph Chiarello at about 1:30 p.m. Friday, but that is expected to be postponed as well.
Under bail reform, there is no monetary bail, so detention hearings are held in order to keep suspects until their case goes through the system. It is expected all three will be ordered held.
McKoy has not yet had a first appearance on the charges.
