Convicted Kauffman killer now in prison

  • News

The man convicted in April Kauffman's killing was transferred to prison Friday.
Ferdinand "Freddy" Augello was taken from the Atlantic County Justice Facility and is now in the care of the state Department of Corrections, records show.
He first was processed at the Central Reception and Assignment Facility in Trenton, and then transferred to New Jersey State Prison, where he is expected to spend the rest of his life.
His current parole date is listed as Jan. 8, 2073.
Augello has vehemently denied any involvement in either Kauffman's May 10, 2012, killing or the drug ring led by her husband, Dr. James Kauffman.
He was convicted of both along with attempted murder of the doctor, who was moved to the Hudson County jail as a result of a plan to kill him.
The doctor was never in danger, the state's key witness testified, Andrew Glick, testified at Augello's trial.
Instead, he said he made it up. But jurors agreed with the state that recorded conversations Glick and Augello had about the plan — which Augello did not know was fake — showed he was complicit.

Augello, 62, was sentenced to life for leading a pill ring with the doctor, and an addition 30 years for murder. He would have to serve 55 years before he is eligible for parole.

He has vowed to fight the conviction and said he expects to one day be vindicated.
