Off-duty sheriff's officer helps save man from ocean

  • News
An off-duty Atlantic County sheriff's officer helped rescue a Philadelphia man from the ocean this weekend. Officer David Nguyen was in Atlantic City at about 2 p.m. Sunday when he saw a man slip and fall off the jetty at Vermont Avenue, Undersheriff Mike Petuskey said. Nguyen and a Mr. Ramon ran to the end of the jetty but couldn't find the victim, according to the report. As they were looking a wave dropped them down into a small hole, as the jetty continued to be pounded by waves. That is when Nguyen and Ramon saw the man lying motionless in a crevasse, Petuskey said. The two men pulled him out, and — with help from Nguyen's son — they called for additional help. Atlantic City Beach Patrol lifeguards responded and helped get the men off the jetty, Petuskey said. The man, whose name was not released, regained consciousness at the scene and was transported to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus. Nguyen has been an officer for 13 years.
