Atlantic City man indicted in sex assault that infected teen

  • News

An Atlantic City man has been indicted in the assault of a teen that left her with a sexually transmitted disease.
Santos Torres, 77, left the country the day after the allegations were first made in 2015.
The then-16-year-old girl was in the hospital just diagnosed with herpes in September of 2015, when she told the nurse that Torres — a family friend — had been sexually inappropriate with her since she was 13.
The next day, Torres flew to Equador.
But this past September, it was learned Torres was back in the country, but the teen then recanted her story. She has since said she felt threatened to take back the allegations and has since reiterated that she was abused.
Torres was indicted on second-degree sexual assault, third-degree endangering the welfare of a child, criminal sexual contact and an act of penetration by a diseased person.
He remains in the Atlantic County Justice Facility, where Superior Court Judge Patricia Wild ordered him detained.
