Throughout the state law enforcement welcomed the Special Olympics on Friday with the Torch Run.
The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office had their own Olympian with Northfield resident Chelsea Cummings.
The 25-year-old who works at the Northfield Wawa has participated in the games for the past five years, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.
Cummings’ favorite event is the freestyle.
“I’m excited to run with our law enforcement officers,” she was quoted as saying before taking the torch herself as part of the Prosecutor’s Office team that received the torch from Atlantic City police.
“This morning several of our officers left Bally's Atlantic City for a nice eight-mile jog as they participated in the NJ Law Enforcement Torch Run benefiting the Special Olympics,” the department posted with a video on its Facebook page. “They were joined by officers from other local departments as well as recruits from the Cape May County Police Academy.”
More than 3,000 officers took part in carrying the “Flame of Hope.”
The culmination of the run is the lighting of the Special Olympics New Jersey cauldron at the Opening Ceremony to officially open the 2018 Summer Games.
The event features more than 2,500 Special Olympics athletes.
