Galloway Township man was arrested a day after he allegedly crashed a stolen car into a tree and ran from police.
Erik Von Hess, 38, of Galloway Township, is charged with eluding police and is in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
An officer stopped a Chrysler Town and Country minivan at 8:47 p.m. Sunday at Route 9 and Seaview Ridge Drive, police said.
As the officer walked toward the minivan, the driver sped off, crashing into a tree a short time later at Jimmie Leeds Road and New Leaf Court, according to the report.
The driver fled into the woods.
Around that time, police learned the minivan had been stolen from Smithville about 15 minutes earlier.
Galloway police, assisted by Stockton University police, surrounded the area and searched using K-9s.
The New Jersey State Police Aviation Division also searched by helicopter.
It was then determined the man had escaped.
A follow-up investigation by Detective Bryan Casey led to Von Hess' arrest Monday.
Von Hess also was previously arrested by Galloway for eluding Sept. 12, 2016, police said.
