Man arrested after allegedly assaulting police and fleeing A.C. car stop

  • News
A Mays Landing man is in jail after he allegedly fought Atlantic City officers during a motor vehicle stop Wednesday, and then fled in his vehicle. Officers Christopher Dodson and Alberto Valles stopped the car in the 2000 block of Atlantic Avenue at about 1:20 p.m. for a motor vehicle and equipment violation, Sgt. Kevin Fair said. Elijah McCoy, 20, refused to lower the heavily tinted windows fully to see how many people were in the car, but the officers could smell raw, unburnt marijuana, according to the report. As the officers tried to investigate, McCoy allegedly refused to get out of the car. When told he was under arrest, he again refused to get out and the officers tried to place him in custody, Fair said.
He assaulted the officers and, the put the car in drive and sped off, with Valles still trying to arrest him, Fair said. Valles was hit with the driver’s door as McCoy sped away, according to the report. McCoy eventually stopped his vehicle at Georgia and Atlantic avenues, and was arrested. The officers could not find the source of the marijuana odor, Fair said. McCoy was charged with aggravated assault by automobile, two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, eluding and obstruction of justice, along with several motor vehicle summons. He was taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility. In his mug shot, McCoy appeared to have a contusion on his left cheek, possibly from the struggle.
