Officer hurt when registered sex offender flees Atlantic City car stop

  • News

A registered sex offender allegedly injured an Atlantic City police officer with his car as he sped away from a motor vehicle stop Thursday.
Jamil Redd, 36, was wanted on a parole violation when Sgt. Richard Andrews and Detective Brian Hambrecht stopped him in the 100 block of N. South Carolina Avenue at 9:23 a.m., during a drug investigation, Lt. Kevin Fair said.
Redd sped away, nearly dragging Hambrecht and causing a minor injury, Fair said.
He then crashed into a tree when he failed to negotiate a turn at South Carolina and Magellan avenues, according to the report.
Redd ran from the vehicle across Route 30, where he was arrested by Detective James Barrett and Officers Christian Ivanov and Jonathan Perez without incident.
Redd was found in possession of 100 bags of heroin, Fair said.
He was charged with eluding, obstruction of justice, resisting arrest, aggravated assault on a police officer, possession of heroin, possession with intent to distribute and contempt of court.
Redd is registered as a Megan's Law offender from an aggravated sexual assault in 2005, according to court records. He was most recently released Aug. 11, 2019, state Department of Corrections records show.
Redd is registered as living in East Orange, although Atlantic City police have him with a Newark address.
He is now in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
