Man arrested after stealing vehicle left running in Atlantic City

2015 Fairview Police Department mug shot A Paterson man was arrested after he allegedly stole a car left running in Atlantic City. The car's owner called police at at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, saying he left his car running, parked in the area of Texas and Pacific avenues, Sgt. Kevin Fair said. Officers Scott Sendrick and Ivaylo Ivanov saw the vehicle heading down Route 30 at about 5:10 p.m., and tried to stop the driver, who fled, according to the report. The officers chased him for a short time, but stopped because it was determined unsafe, Fair said. During the chase, the man turned the vehicle around, allowing officers to see his face, according to the report. He was later identified as Isa Ahmad. Outside the Public Safety Building, the owner saw pass by on Atlantic Avenue, Fair said. It was then found on the first block of South Iowa Avenue. Officers James Eckert and Danish Mohammad found Ahmad — who Sendrick positively identified — walking on Brighton Avenue. He had the vehicle's keys, Fair said. Ahmad, 25, was charged with eluding, receiving stolen property and numerous traffic violations. He also had a contempt of court warrant. He was taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility, Fair said. But there was no record of him there. Court records show Ahmad is currently on probation after pleading guilty to previous charges, including burglary. He was sentenced to two years' probation last year. Atlantic City police used the incident to remind residents and visitors not to leave their vehicle running while unattended with the doors unlocked, especially for a significant period of time.
