A Camden man was arrested for allegedly assaulting a man and then trying to get behind the wheel of an Atlantic City police car after being tasered. Police were called to Connecticut and Drexel avenues at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday for a large fight, Sgt. Kevin Fair said. When officers arrived, they were told a 56-year-old man had been assaulted with a blunt object. The victim was taken to the hospital. Officer Stephen Rando found the suspect with help from witnesses. Thomas Jones, 30, was bloody and holding the object believed used in the attack when he was found walking in the 1100 block of Baltic Avenue, according to the report. He refused several orders to stop and was rambling incoherently, Fair said. Officer Justin Draper used his conducted energy device, or taser, in an effort to safely end the situation, Fair said. Jones began to resist the officers as they tried to arrest him, according to the report. He got up and attempted to get into the driver’s seat of a police vehicle, Fair said. He was taken into custody after a struggle. He was take to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center for evaluation. Jones is charged with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, resisting arrest and obstruction of justice. He was released on a summons.
