  • News
An elderly Atlantic City woman rescued from a submerged car Saturday has died from her injuries. The crash was caused after a Galloway Township woman lost control of her car while using a cell phone, according to police. Ung Hoa Mui, 88, was a passenger in one of two cars involved in a crash on Route 40 on Saturday. Atlantic City and Egg Harbor Township patrol officers responded to the crash at about 8:30 a.m. near milepost 61.
Mui's vehicle went into the marsh and wound up submerged. Two occupants who escaped told officers the woman was still inside. The found her with her upper body under water. She was not breathing and had no pulse. Officers from both towns pulled her out and gave her CPR. Danielle Shenk, 25, lost control, striking the center divider and then hitting Mui's vehicle in the next lane. That car, driven by a 52-year-old Atlantic City man, left the roadway, rolled over and ended up in the marsh. The driver and a 77-year-old Atlantic City woman in the front seat escaped the car. Shenk has been issued motor vehicle summons for reckless driving and use of a wireless telephone in a moving vehicle.  Additional charges are pending the outcome of an investigation. This investigation is being led by Officer Ivan Lopez of the Accident Investigations Section with assistance from the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.  Anyone with information about this accident is asked to call Atlantic City police at 609-347-5744.
