Atlantic City woman's own health battle has her looking out for others

  • News
Battling cancer, Jaimee Rex learned how important it is to be informed. The Atlantic City native was diagnosed with breast cancer in July 2014. After eight rounds of chemotherapy and 35 rounds of radiation, she has been cancer-free for four years. “I believe if you know better, you do better,” Rex said. But often she found that those in her community choose not to know if there is something wrong with their health. “I am watching my village of young, vibrant men and women being diagnosed with many diseases,” said Rex, 56, who now lives in Egg Harbor Township. “Many of them too late.” That is where her group Creating Strength Amongst Minorities comes in.
Health Wellness and Beauty Fair 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 6 All Wars Memorial building, Atlantic City
“It is my obligation to the community to educate and organize venues, based on the importance of changing the mindset.” The group is now sponsoring the Health, Wellness and Beauty Fair on Oct. 6 at the All Wars Memorial Building. October is the month of awareness for breast cancer, domestic/sexual violence, pregnancy and infant loss, and mental health, she points out. The speakers at the fair will address all of those issues, including personal stories and statistics. The fair will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and will include free health screenings, dance for exercise, music and vendors.
