Two women and a child were displaced by an early morning fire in Atlantic City on Friday.
But the quick work of firefighters helped save the house next door.
A woman with her child rang the doorbell of Fire Station 3 at about 3:20, alerting firefighters to the blaze that already had fully engulfed the front screened-in porch.
"While the grandmother was calling 911, the granddaughter ran three doors down to the firehouse and knocked on the door and alerted the firemen," Fire Chief Scott Evans said.
The fire extended to the home next door at 1800 McKinley Ave.
"Radiant heat melted the electric meter and broke through a window on the adjacent home," Evans said.
Both homes are one-story woodframe homes.
Three engine companies, a ladder company and a rescue company responded.
The fire was under control by 4:20 a.m., Evans said.
