A Pleasantville man with a history of sexually abusing children is now serving a six-year prison sentence in a case involving two young sisters.
Sherron Scott, now 34, was accused of assaulting the girls -- then 8 and 9 -- inside their home in 2017, while he was dating their mother.
The girls' father took them to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office after they told him about the assaults.
Both told of separate instances just after they got out of the shower, when Scott touched their genitals and used his fingers to penetrate them.
The older girl also told of a second incident when Scott allegedly made her pull down her pants while he was driving her in his car.
He pleaded guilty this past December to two second-degree counts of sexual assault. He was sentenced to prison in April, and must serve at least five years and one month before he is eligible for parole.
Scott also must now register as a Megan's Law offender, which he has not previously had to do, despite two separate prior cases of similar abuse.
“What’s more disturbing, or just as disturbing, and somewhat unsettling, is that the defendant has prior convictions for a similar act,” Superior Court Judge Benjamin Podolnick said at a detention hearing last year, when he ordered Scott held pending trial.
In 2012, Scott was indicted for sexual assault of a victim ages 13 to 15 years old in Camden County Superior Court, according to court records. He pleaded guilty to third-degree endangering the welfare of a child and was sentenced to four years in prison.
Podolnick noted that such a long incarceration for a first-time crime of the third degree indicated that there was more to the charge.
It is not clear how long Scott actually served, but two years later he was charged again.
This time, out of Atlantic County, he was indicted of first-degree aggravated sexual assault. He pleaded guilty to fourth-degree child cruelty and neglect, and was sentenced to 256 days in the Atlantic County Justice Facility, and three years’ probation.
Due to the charges he pleaded to, Scott was not required to register as a Megan’s Law offender, even though the victims in both previous cases were underage.
With time served, he will be out of prison in 2023, records show.
